DIY-Iconic “Friends” Frame

DIY Iconic "Friends" Frame

I love the show Friends! My husband and I watched it from the beginning with our then two week old daughter sitting with us. She is now 21 and has watched Friends her entire life. I can’t even count how many times I have watched the entire series. My absolute favorite episode is The One Where No One Is Ready.

Anyway… I have always loved the frame on Monica’s door. So I decided to finally make my own.

Here’s a bit of trivia for you on the frame. It had a mirror in it and was broken by a crew member during filming. The producers liked how it looked and decided to keep it, according to Buzzfeed.

To begin my own Friends frame, I picked up some Sculpey polymer clay.

I actually bought two packages of it but I only used one and even had a bit left over from it.

I put freezer paper down first and then rolled out a brick of the clay to about an 1/8th of an inch thick.

I cut the middle of the frame to 5×7 inches.

I added more clay to the two outside corners that didn’t roll out with as much as I would have liked.

Our old pasta maker dedicated to clay. If you don’t have one no problem just roll out more clay with the rolling pin.

From here on out I used  the pasta maker to roll my pieces. I rolled long pieces of clay to fold and sort of drape onto the frame. If you want to, you can add a hole for hanging it at this time into the frame. Make sure you cover it with the draping when you add it to the top.

I made three “ribbons” of clay and the middle one I left long to make the curl on the ends. I smoothed the bottom of them onto the frame as I went.

I did the top drape then the bottom and cut the excess clay off after each side was finished.

I joined all the pieces as seamlessly as possible to both the frame and the sides.

After all the sides were together, I baked it on an old cookie sheet according to the directions on the package of clay and then let it cool completely.

Finally I get to paint. I picked sunflower yellow by Folk Art. All the other yellows I had were so bright I thought it would be too much.

The frame is pretty sturdy but I used a mop brush to paint it because it was softer and it could get into all the folds and swirls better than a stiffer brush.

The last detail I added was a small amount of distressing. I used  burnt umber and a staining medium I mixed together. I dabbed it on with a paper towel, let it sit a bit and wiped it off.

Now I have the Friends frame I always wanted. If you don’t or can’t put it up with a nail on your door, I used a heavy gaffer’s tape on the back or maybe an adhesive velcro would work.

  3. Friends is definitely one of my all-time favorites. I proclaim it is for sure! I’m not sure if I have a favorite episode but definitely have favorite scenes. If I’m remembering correctly, your favorite episode has the scene where Joey puts on all of Chandler’s clothes. Is that right?
Anyway. . . I love your clay frame and wish I had the patience for this kind of clay project. I’m afraid I wouldn’t be able to get those beautiful lines you achieved. I’m more apt to try to get my hubby to make it out of wood. Ha! Alas though, all my doors are glass and I wouldn’t have a place to hang it. Thanks for the tutorial though. Love it!

    1. That’s the one! I guess glass doors would make it hard to hang a frame. Thank you for stopping by. Have a great weekend!
