Pallet Sign with a Little Twist

Pallet Sign With A Little Twist

Pallets are everywhere, pallet furniture, pallet home decor, pallet signs. I too have made a pallet sign or two, mostly for Halloween and Christmas.Believe  Bubble Bubble Toil and Trouble

I saw a quote awhile back that I really wanted to have up on my wall. I don’t put a lot of wording on my walls but for this I decided I would make an exception.

What’s the twist? Well I decided to elevate the sign and gold leaf part of it. I had an entirely different way to do it, but I chickened out at the last minute. I wanted to use a glue gun and put the gold leaf on over the raised glue. It did work because I tried it yesterday on a test piece, but with the thick lettering I used I don’t think the glue would have laid out the way I would have liked.

The board for this sign was originally going to be a large Christmas snowman scene to sit outside our front door. I had painted it a dark blue and then left it sitting in the garage for about six months. The other day I decided I wanted to cut it smaller, it was as tall as the Halloween sign above. After it was shortened, I painted over the blue with my new go to chalk paint color of Parisian Grey. I sanded it down after the grey was dry and it sat for another day. I hate getting stumped on a project.

Yesterday I tried several different ideas to get this quote on my board. I used our projector, no good. I tried finding a font I liked and mirroring the images to transfer with freezer paper, again no good. Finally I had an idea, I needed to leave it alone. I was forcing it.

After a good night sleep, I had figured out what I was doing. I looked up a couple of different fonts and downloaded them. Then I printed off the words I wanted in each font. I got out my trusty graphite paper and traced them onto my board. Pallet sign with a twist

Finally, I don’t know why I was overthinking this thing. I used Deep Midnight Blue Americana acrylic paint to do some of the words. The rest are going to be gold leaf.

My original thought was to have a few of the words to be raised off of the sign. I tried with hot glue on a test piece and it worked great but with the lettering I used, the glue wouldn’t lay down the way I wanted it to. Instead I painted the adhesive onto the lettering and let them dry completely.

I applied the glue thick so you can see it on here.

Two pieces of gold leaf foil was all I needed and the package came with 18 pages, so I will be finding more projects for it.

I laid down the foil onto the dry adhesive and burnished it on to the wood with my finger and a paint brush.

The brush helps clean all the bits off neatly.

This is almost the end product. I added gold wire wrapped around it with a few beads also.

It is a bit hard to see the wire and beads.

“At the end of the day,

Your feet should be dirty,

Your hair messy,

and Your eyes sparkling.”

What is one of your favorite quotes?

Although this project gave me some trouble and I couldn’t do exactly what I had set out to do, I really like it.

  1. Love everything about your sign. Sometimes projects have to be rethought to come out the way they were meant to, regardless of what we had in mind. Your sign came out awesome in end, love gold foiling on certain words, simple and awesome. The saying is great, love directness of it. Telling us all something. Happy weekend

  2. It’s lovely! I too love signs and your idea of having the gold leaf on it is great! So pretty! I’m so glad you shared it with us at Sweet Inspiration!

  3. I love the gold leafing you did. It adds a little touch of sparkle that just makes this pop! Thanks for sharing your tutorial with us at Merry Monday this week!

  4. Hi I’m Anne from Birdsong Bits and Pieces (, and I found you through the Inspire Me Tuesday blog hop. I’ve never used gold leaf before and would be afraid of totally screwing it up. However, your post gives me a little hope that maybe I could do it, lol. Thanks for the idea and inspiration! Anyway, have a wonderful day, and I hope you can pop over to my blog ( sometime to say hi!
