Moon Tea Halloween Sign-DIY Blog Challenge

My favorite time of year has rolled around again and the DIY Blog Challenge has too with Halloween being the theme. It is never hard for me to think of Halloween projects to make. Having the time to make them is sometimes hard.

This year I was inspired to make a vintage looking Halloween sign to fit in with my Halloween decor. I found many different signs that I took inspiration from but I wanted to make up my own design.

I started with a 11×14 wood plaque I picked up at one of the craft stores.

Then I drew up a rough idea of what I wanted my design to be like. I base painted the board with black around the edge and then I mixed a gray for the surface.

Once that was dry I traced around a bowl for the circle of the moon, then painted the base color of the moon a light gray.

Then I painted on the witch’s hat and dry brushed in some darker grays in the moon.

Next, I added in the teacup/cauldron over part of the moon.

Since the sign is for tea and tea readings I painted small tea reading symbols onto the cup. I also added logs and fire underneath the teacup so it would look like a mix between a cauldron and a cup.

Using a black paint pen, I wrote on Moon Tea and the rest of the lettering.

I still thought it needed something so I added in the stars on the hat. To finish, I sealed it with a Polycrylic clear satin finish by Minwax.

It fits in just nicely with my witch’s table.

  1. This is so cute! I can’t believe you painted it by hand! I wish I was that talented of a painter.

    1. Thank you so much! I only dabble at painting. This is actually my very first original design that I have tried that hasn’t flopped. 🙂

  2. That is so cute! I wish I could paint, but I don’t have an artistic painting bone in my body. The sign looks perfect on your witches table!
